Step 3: Practice the MIcroscope Identification game below:

Microscope Timed Quiz

Step 4: log into Schoology and use the access codes to join and take the microscope test .
You must earn an "A" on the test in order to use the microscope in class.
-You can also google the answers if needed or use the images on my website LOCATED IN THE RESOURCES TAB!!

-
You will also get a grade on a performance test. I will be calling you up in pairs to take a hands on quiz to evaluate your knowledge of microscope parts and what they do.

Characteristics of Life as Viewed through a Microscope

All living things are made out of one or more cells.

It is difficult to picture what a cell is until you have used a microscope to see them.

This activity will help you look at cells from the perspective of a microscope and help you not only become familiar with the shapes and sizes of cells, but also help you see that EVEN THE TINIEST LIFE FORM OUT THERE (The cell) does all the characteristics of life that YOU DO.

1. Please click the BLUE BUTTON below to access the document.

2. When the document loads, then scroll down until you see the blue highlighted links for each living thing in the boxes.

3. Click on the BLUE writing to access the videos to observe the different microscopic organisms and record your observations.

Get a DEGREE in Pedigrees!

10/29/2015

You cannot always quickly breed living things (like humans) together just to tell if a gene is dominant or recessive. You cannot always afford a test to get your DNA analyzed either. YOU can afford to use your brain and logical problem solving skills to piece together family history in order to figure out if a gene is dominant or recessive by looking at a family's PEDIGREE CHART.

Just remember:
1. Each parent gives 1/2 of his or her genes to the offspring.
2. If you see a trait SKIP a generation and 2 parents do NOT show the trait that is tracked, the trait is likely a recessive gene and the parents are HETEROZYGOUS for that trait.

Use LInk # 1 below to access the first pedigree practice site:this site allows you to check your work.

The link # 2 involves a more in depth story line where you interview multiple family members to solve a mystery.

So, now that you know about chromosomes a little bit, why are they important? You may have said because they determine your traits... but chromosomes can also unlock one of the very important qualities that make you.. you: YOUR GENDER. Please click the link below to access the first activity:

Sex detirmination

Part 2: The pictures above are called a karyoptype. A karyotype is an organized way that scientists arrange chromosomes to figure out if you are a girl or a boy. Identify the main difference between these two sets of chromosomes from two different humans.

Make your observation on your student sheet.

Part 3; In this part, you will research an organism that reproduces in an unexpected manner, and use the criteria on your student sheet to post a report of what you learned in the comment section (click on the comment tab above)

One very important skill anyone should have is to be able to communicate and present information clearly. Some people have careers where they simply write informative brochures, presentations or websites about a topic. In this assignment, your task is to research a genetic disorder and create a brochure that will be displayed in a doctor's office to teach people about it and how to live with it.

Earlier this year, you learned that REPRODUCTION is a characteristic that all living things share!
We all want to make more of ourselves to continue the species as a whole. There are 2 types of reproduction:

SEXUAL and Asexual.
The type of reproduction strategy affects the variation, or genetic DIFFERENCES,  offspring will have.

Click on the button below to access the interactive pathway you will travel through to learn more about some species on our planet and their odd methods of reproducing themselves...
